Onboarding: Show Them the Love!!!

Because nothing says “Welcome aboard” like actually making people feel welcome.

There’s a moment in every new job where you find yourself wondering, “Did I make the right decision?” For many people, that moment happens on Day One, before morning tea.

And the difference between someone diving into their new role with enthusiasm or quietly updating their SEEK profile by lunchtime often comes down to one thing: onboarding. Not the paperwork, not the login details …..the experience.

Recently, a mate told me about his son’s first week as a graduate at a large Australian insurer. And honestly? It should be printed, laminated, and handed out as Exhibit A in the case for structured onboarding.

A Masterclass in Making People Feel Welcome

This insurer didn’t just run an induction. They ran a production.

The graduate intake arrived to a fully choreographed schedule, literally down to the minute. The company had coordinated time with the MD, the CPO, the CFO and the COO, each personally dropping in to welcome the new cohort. For a graduate starting their very first corporate role, that’s not just memorable, that’s formative.

Every detail had been considered. There was branded merch on arrival (and not just a lonely pen). We’re talking shirts, jackets, caps, bags…the works. The kind of kit that turns a wide-eyed new starter into a walking billboard by choice, not obligation.

There were guided building tours. End-of-trip facilities. Introductions to the systems. Structured learning sessions to demystify the software stack. Everything was designed to help them not just do their job, but feel part of something from day one.

And here’s the key: Every interaction, every touchpoint, every moment said the same thing: “We’re glad you’re here.”

Because that’s what onboarding is really about. It’s signalling to a new hire that they matter.

The Contrast: The All-Too-Common “Find Your Own Way” Model

Now, let’s talk about the other version. The one every recruiter hears far too often.

The new starter who arrives on their first day… only to sit at an empty desk. With no laptop. No instructions. No manager in sight. No idea what to do, where to go, or who to ask.

They spend the day (or days!) twiddling their thumbs, politely refreshing their inbox, silently praying someone notices they exist. And before you know it, the excitement of a new role has been replaced with doubt, frustration, or worst of all, buyer’s remorse.

It’s not that anyone meant to drop the ball. It’s that nobody owned onboarding.

And in a market where talent is hard to secure, harder to retain and almost impossible to rehire once lost, that’s a costly mistake.

Onboarding Isn’t a “Nice to Have”.  It’s a Strategic Lever

A well-designed onboarding process:

Accelerates productivity by giving people the tools, clarity and confidence they need.

Strengthens engagement by making people feel valued from the outset.

Improves retention because employees who feel supported early stay longer.

Reinforces culture through intentional interactions and shared experiences.

Creates ambassadors because people talk, and nothing markets your business better than a positive day-one story.

And the graduate example proves a powerful point: If you can make someone who has never set foot in a corporate office feel like a meaningful part of the business on Day One, imagine what you can do for an experienced hire.

How to “Show Them the Love” in Your Own Business

Here are a few simple (and very achievable) principles:

Prepare everything before they arrive. Laptop, logins, system access, workspace, welcome notes, the lot.

Make introductions intentional. A quick hello goes a long way. A scheduled welcome is even better.

Design the first week, not just the first hour. People feel confident when they know what’s coming.

Give them the story behind the business. Vision, values, strategy, it all helps people understand where they fit.

Provide a buddy or go-to contact. Someone who can answer the real questions: “Where’s the good coffee?” “Which kitchen has the decent mugs?” “How do I not get locked out of the system?”

Celebrate their arrival. Merch, morning tea, a card, it doesn’t have to be grand, just genuine.

First Impressions Last Longer Than Job Ads

Hiring is hard. Engaging people is harder. But onboarding? That’s where you turn hiring into retention.

If the goal is to build teams that stay, grow and perform, then onboarding isn’t a checkbox, it’s your opening argument. Your first impression. Your first opportunity to show your newest team member that they’ve joined the right business.

So, next time someone new walks through your doors, remember: Show them the love.

It pays dividends.
