Understanding The Brief

A CFO appointment is rarely just a finance hire. It is a decision about who will sit closest to the CEO, shape the commercial agenda and bring clarity when the stakes are highest. Titles only tell part of the story. A CFO in a founder-led business, a Head of Finance in professional services and a Finance Director in a larger enterprise can carry very different mandates. We work through that context first, then take a brief to market that reflects what the role genuinely needs to achieve.

Market Perspective

What's actually happening in this market.

Finance leaders are no longer judged on reporting discipline alone. Boards and owners expect them to connect finance with strategy, influence capital allocation, improve enterprise value and build teams that produce better decisions in uncertain conditions. Technology leadership is increasingly part of the remit too, particularly modernising ERP environments, improving automation and making better use of data and analytics.

In SMEs, the strongest appointment is often a broad, hands-on leader who can move confidently across finance and, at times, operations, people or technology. In larger organisations, the challenge shifts to scale, governance, incentive structures and specialised teams, with greater board, audit and investor exposure. Across both markets, proven leaders remain scarce, particularly those who can combine commercial impact with control, credibility and calm judgement.

What We Assess

What good looks like at this level.

Commercial judgement

Shapes decisions alongside the CEO and board, rather than reporting on them after the fact.

Leadership through change

Has led finance through growth, restructuring, M&A or genuine complexity, not only steady-state environments.

Governance and risk

Understands what sound governance looks like, where the real risks sit and when to challenge.

Executive fit

Works effectively within the executive team's style and dynamics. Capability earns the shortlist. Fit secures the appointment.
